Hallstatt sits about 75 km south-east of Salzburg, deep in the Salzkammergut lake district. It looks remote on the map, but it is very doable as a day trip. Here are your options, from cheapest to easiest.
By car (about 1.5 hours)
Driving is the fastest way and gives you the scenic lake roads past Fuschlsee and Lake Wolfgang. The catch: Hallstatt’s centre is car-free, so you park in the P1 or P2 car parks outside the village (around €8–12 for the day) and walk in. In peak summer the car parks can fill by late morning, so start early.
By train and bus (2.5 hours)
Public transport is scenic but slow. The classic route is a train from Salzburg to Attnang-Puchheim, a connecting train down to Hallstatt station, then the little ferry across the lake to the village — a beautiful arrival. Alternatively, bus 150 runs to Bad Ischl, where you change for a bus to Hallstatt. Budget 2.5–3 hours each way and check connections in advance, as missing one can cost an hour.
By private day trip (easiest)
