Overview

Tucked into the Tennengebirge above Werfen lies the Eisriesenwelt — the “World of the Ice Giants” and the largest ice cave on the planet. A scenic road and a steep cable car deliver you to the entrance, where a lantern-lit path leads you past towering frozen formations and shimmering ice walls — even at the height of summer.

Across the valley, the 11th-century Hohenwerfen fortress crowns a sheer rock. Its ramparts, medieval rooms and a historic falconry show make it one of the most memorable stops near Salzburg.

No. The Eisriesenwelt ice cave is open May to October only, so this tour runs in that season.

How fit do I need to be?

The cave is cold and involves around 700 steps. Moderate fitness, warm layers and good shoes are recommended; it’s not ideal for very limited mobility.

Can we see both in one day?
