Hallstatt Train Station: How to Get from the Station to the Village

2026年9月28日 · 4 分钟阅读

The first surprise for most rail travellers: Hallstatt station is not in Hallstatt village. It sits on the quiet eastern shore of Lake Hallstatt, directly opposite the village. There is no practical walking route around the lake — the way across is a small ferry.

The ferry from the station to the village

From the platform you walk a few minutes down to the pier. The ferry crosses to the landing in the village centre in about ten minutes, and its departures are timed to the trains. A single crossing costs a few euros. The view of the village as you approach from the water is one of the best arrivals in Austria.

Two things to know: the ferry does not run late into the evening, and it runs less often outside the summer season. Check the timetable before you plan the return trip, and leave enough time in the village to make the last crossing.

By train from Salzburg

There is no direct train. You go from Salzburg to Attnang-Puchheim and change there to the regional train through the lake district (the Salzkammergut line via Bad Ischl). Plan on about 2.5 hours including the ferry. Trains on the lake line do not run every hour, so look up the exact connection in the ÖBB app beforehand.

By train from Vienna

From Vienna the route is the same after Attnang-Puchheim: fast train from Vienna to Attnang-Puchheim, regional train to Hallstatt station, ferry across. Allow 3.5 to 4 hours each way — a long day for a return trip.

Alternative: the bus

Buses from Bad Ischl stop at Hallstatt Lahn at the southern end of the village, about ten minutes on foot from the centre. That avoids the ferry timetable, but still means a change in Bad Ischl. From Salzburg, bus 150 takes you to Bad Ischl. The full comparison is in our guide how to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg.

With luggage

The village centre is car-free and the lanes are narrow and partly stepped. From the ferry landing most hotels are a short walk away — pack light, or ask your hotel how best to reach them with suitcases.

The easier way

If connections, ferry times and changes are more than you want on a day out, a private car picks you up at your hotel and drops you at the edge of the car-free centre. Our Hallstatt day trip from Salzburg does exactly that, with a fixed price for the whole car. Ask us about other starting points, including Vienna and Munich.
